The Granville Times: Netsurf Edition
The Granville Times
Volume 3, Number 3 (Special Edition)
This special edition of the Granville Times is brought to you in
Online format!
I had one of those pointless days when it was hard to start anything
productive, or even to go out anywhere. I collected some E-mail, then
aimlessly surfed the Net a while, coming up with an odd collection of
websites, each of which could have led onward. Then I randomly
doodled some drawings with "XPaint". In the days before computers I
would have read the newspaper and doodled on a piece of paper, with
equally useless results. But computers are good at stimulating
lateral thinking.
One of my doodles was a red triangle. I suddenly thought, what a
remarkably nice triangle this is: the proportions of the sides, the
angles enclosed, the inclination of its base from the horizontal, the
red colour - all have come together to create a pleasing effect! I
saved the triangle, and began to experiment with additional elements -
a curve, more colour - and a cartoon took shape. A title for the
cartoon seemed to suggest itself. The title invited expansion into a
whimsical story, indeed elements of the story were suggested by some
of the websites I had earlier discovered. Some work with an image
manipulation program and an HTML editor, some checking on Yahoo.com,
some re-writing - and I began to think, "I wouldn't mind sharing this
with a few friends".
The results of this creative (?) effort are now available for you to
inspect and possibly enjoy. Direct your web browser to:
http://users.openverse.com/~dtinker/chinatwn.html
(e.g. using Netscape click on "File", then "Open Location" type in the
preceding line exactly as it appears here, then click on "Open in
Browser"). I'd suggest you read it using a screen resolution of 800 x
600 pixels for best effect.
The 'links' in the story may take you far and wide. I hope you find
them entertaining on some dull afternoon. You may even be stimulated
to continue the story in the same Stream-of-Consciousness style,
incorporating your own oddball websites into the ongoing saga. If so,
you can send me your efforts; I'll edit them into HTML code if needed,
and add them to the story. Who knows how it will all turn out!
Happy surfing
